Starting off Right
The
Cunningham Racing team has been working hard all winter long to add some
extra speed to the new #61 machine. This
past weekend was a great start to the 2006 season for Cunningham Racing.
Throughout the 2006 season KC will be contending for the
Melling’s Rookie of the Year title in the UARA-Stars division.
The UARA division is a touring late model series that stretches
from Georgia to Northern Virginia. We arrived early Friday morning for practice. It was evident from the start that it was going to be tough field. The team not only would have to overcome the other 40 cars, in which only 22 would make the field on qualifying times, but also the fact that they had never ever seen the historic Hickory Motor Speedway before Friday morning. Anticipation
has been growing for the new season and now it had arrived, it was
Saturday.
During practice the team appeared competitive with being one of the
fastest racecars on the track. Qualifying
began and KC Cunningham qualified 30th which placed him 6th
in the qualifying race. In
the qualifying race KC raced his way up to the 2nd position,
with 5 laps to go he believed that he had the chance to take the leader
but decided to take a 2nd and be certain to make the main
event. That finished gave him
a 24th place starting position for the main race. The green
flag dropped and the UARA
opened their fifth season of racing.
KC in the #61 car had worked his way into the top 15 when he was
caught up in a wreck in turn 2 on lap 72.
He then ran 5th in line keeping up with the leaders for
the next 8 laps and received the lucky dog, which put him at the tail end
of the lead lap. From tail
end of the line KC raced his way back to the 6th position where
he would finish the race. KC was finally able to match a great result to his
potential with this season opener. “We had a good car this weekend and I just feel honored
to be able to run against such excellent competitors. I feel like our
team is much stronger than we
were in 2005. I would also
like to thank Brian and Brenda Carter for their help this weekend,”
quoted KC. We
are looking for individuals interested in being part of our team.
We need crew members and sponsorship.
Our next UARA event is scheduled for April 1st at
Southern National. The
UARA Division is a touring Late
Model series their events range from Florida to Virginia all the way out
to Tennessee. This is one of the most well run, competitive divisions
anywhere combining great drivers with great equipment.
